How many steps would you climb to get to the top of a lighthouse? Little Sable Point Lighthouse in Silver Lake State Park has 130 steps to the top, and it’s worth every step to see the spectacular view of Lake Michigan from the lighthouse balcony.

The first lighthouse keeper at Little Sable Point Lighthouse, James Davenport, was the grandson of Chief Waubojeeg, a Native American chief, according to a brochure at the lighthouse put out by the Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association. It also notes that the lighthouse has had fourteen keepers there over time.

The dwelling and secondary buildings on the grounds were demolished in 1955, the year after the light was automated and a keeper was no longer necessary, leaving only the brick tower lighthouse that now stands.
